Casement Windows

Frequently Asked Questions

A casement window is a type of window that is attached to its frame by one or more hinges at the side. It operates by swinging outward or inward, similar to a door, rather than sliding up and down or side to side. Casement windows are often opened with a crank, lever, or cam handle, making them easy to operate, even in hard-to-reach places.

Hinged Design:

Casement windows are hinged on the side and typically open outward. The hinge can be on the left or right, depending on the desired opening direction.

Unobstructed Views:

Because casement windows do not have muntins (the strips that divide the panes of glass) or sashes that cross the middle, they provide an unobstructed view when open or closed.

Excellent Ventilation:

When fully opened, casement windows can capture breezes from different angles and direct them into the house, offering superior ventilation compared to other window types.

Energy Efficiency:

Casement windows seal tightly when closed, reducing air leakage and improving energy efficiency. This tight seal helps in maintaining the indoor temperature, reducing heating and cooling costs.

Ease of Operation:

The crank mechanism of casement windows allows for easy opening and closing. This is particularly useful for windows placed in hard-to-reach areas, such as over kitchen sinks or countertops.

Casement windows typically consist of several key parts, each playing a role in their functionality, appearance, and performance.

Here’s a breakdown of the main components of casement windows:

1. Frame

Head: The top horizontal part of the window frame.

Jambs: The vertical sides of the window frame.

Sill: The bottom horizontal part of the window frame.

2. Sash

The movable part of the window that holds the glass. In a casement window, the sash is hinged on one side and swings outward or inward.

3. Hinges

Side Hinges: Located along the side of the window, these allow the window to swing open outward or inward. Casement windows are commonly side-hinged but can also be hinged at the top or bottom in less common configurations.

4. Crank or Operator

Crank Handle: A hand-operated mechanism used to open and close the window. When turned, it extends or retracts an arm that moves the sash in or out.

Operator Arm: The arm connected to the sash that moves it in or out when the crank is turned.

5. Locking Mechanism

Locking Handle: A lever or handle used to lock the window in place when it is closed.

Locking Hook or Cam: The part that engages with the locking handle to securely close the window.

6. Weatherstripping

A flexible material that creates a seal between the sash and the frame when the window is closed, preventing drafts, water, and air leaks.

7. Glass

The panes of glass in the sash, which can be single, double, or triple-glazed depending on the energy efficiency desired. Double or triple glazing often has gas-filled spaces (like argon) for insulation.

8. Glazing Beads

Strips that hold the glass securely in place within the sash.

The cost of casement windows can vary depending on a few key factors, including:

  • Window Size: Larger windows typically cost more than standard sizes.
  • Frame Material: Options like vinyl, aluminum, wood, or fiberglass can affect the price.
  • Glass Type: Standard, energy-efficient, or specialty glass options have different pricing.
  • Customization: Unique shapes, colors, or added features can also impact the cost.
  • Installation: Costs depend on the complexity of the job and whether it’s a replacement or new installation.

On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $350 to $750 per casement window, including basic installation. For premium materials or high-performance glass, prices can go up to $1,000 or more per window.
