Frequently Asked Questions
What is a picture window?
A picture window, also known as a fixed window, is a type of window that does not open or close. It is designed primarily to provide natural light and an unobstructed view while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of a space. Since fixed lite windows do not have any operable parts, they are often more energy-efficient than windows that open, as there are fewer gaps for air leakage.
What are the key features and benefits of picture windows?
Non-Operable Design:
Picture windows are stationary and cannot be opened. This design is intended to maximize light entry and provide a clear view without the need for ventilation.
Unobstructed Views:
The absence of sashes or hardware in picture windows allows for uninterrupted views of the outdoors, making them ideal for showcasing scenic vistas or architectural features.
Versatile Shapes and Sizes:
These windows come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including rectangular, square, circular, and custom shapes, providing flexibility in design and architectural applications.
Energy Efficiency:
Since picture windows do not open, they typically have better insulation and sealing compared to operable windows. This can result in improved energy efficiency and reduced heating and cooling costs.
How much do picture windows cost?
The cost of picture windows can vary depending on several key factors, including:
- Size and Shape: Standard sizes are generally more affordable, while larger or custom-shaped windows (like circles or trapezoids) may cost more.
- Frame Material: Vinyl is typically the most cost-effective option, while wood, aluminum, or fiberglass frames are higher in price.
- Glass Options: Standard double-pane glass is more affordable, while energy-efficient or specialty glass, like low-E coatings, can increase costs.
- Customization: Decorative grilles, colour finishes, or other design enhancements can impact the price.
- Installation: Costs depend on whether it’s part of a new build, a replacement, or involves structural modifications.
On average, picture windows range from $250 to $750 per window, including standard installation. Custom designs or premium materials can increase the cost to $1,000 or more.
