General Maintenance
Cleaning Frames and Glass
- Clean frames and sashes using a mild soap and water solution.
- Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, which can damage finishes.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth or sponge to avoid scratching surfaces.
- For glass, use a non-ammonia glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth for streak-free cleaning.
Regular Inspections
- Check for signs of wear, damage, or weathering at least twice a year.
- Inspect seals and caulking around windows and doors for cracks or gaps.
Windows
Tracks and Hinges
- Remove debris from tracks of sliding windows with a vacuum or small brush.
- Lubricate tracks and hinges with a silicone-based lubricant every 6 months to ensure smooth operation.
Weatherstripping
Inspect weatherstripping for wear or tears and replace it as needed to maintain energy efficiency.
Condensation
- Reduce indoor humidity to minimize condensation buildup.
- Ensure proper ventilation in rooms with high humidity levels, such as bathrooms and kitchens.
- Ventilation is the most effective means to remove moisture from your home. By exchanging some of the drier outdoor winter air for warm humid interior air, the moisture level inside the house will be reduced.
- Be sure to run your kitchen fan while cooking.
- Drapes and blinds should be left open during daytime. At night, raise blinds at least 4” up to allow air to flow against the glass.
- Run the exhaust fan in your bathroom when showering to remove excess humidity.
Screens
- Remove screens and wash them with soapy water.
- Rinse and let them air dry completely before reinstalling.
Doors
Hardware Care
- Tighten screws on hinges, handles, and locks as needed.
- Lubricate moving parts, such as hinges and locking mechanisms, with a silicone-based lubricant to prevent squeaks and rust.
